Why the files come out smaller

Most images carry weight nobody looks at: camera metadata, colour profiles, and an encoder setting chosen for archival rather than for the web. Stripping that and re-encoding at a sensible quality typically takes a large slice off the file while leaving the picture looking the same.

Files keep their original format — a PNG comes back a PNG — and if compressing would make a file bigger, which happens with images that are already optimised, the original is handed back untouched.
