How it works

  1. Step 1

    Drop a PDF

Drag up to 15 PDFs onto the page, or browse for them. Each can be up to 25 MB.

  2. Step 2

    Draw over the secrets

Click Redact to see every page, then drag a box across anything that has to go. Draw as many as you need.

  3. Step 3

    Download it

Marked pages come back flattened, with the covered text genuinely gone rather than hidden underneath a rectangle.

Why this actually redacts

Drawing a black rectangle on top of a page hides nothing: the words stay in the file, still selectable and still returned by any text extractor, which is how documents have leaked after being published as redacted. Marked pages here are rendered to an image with the boxes painted into the pixels, so there is no text left underneath to recover.

Removed
the covered text is destroyed, not layered over — it cannot be selected or copied back
Flattened
a redacted page becomes an image, so it stops being selectable or searchable
Untouched
pages you do not mark keep their real, selectable text

Questions

How do I redact a PDF without Adobe Acrobat?
Add the PDF here, drag a box over everything that has to disappear, and download the result. It is free, needs no account and no software, and the text under each box is removed from the file rather than hidden.
Why is drawing a black box in a PDF editor not enough?
Because the shape sits on top of the text instead of replacing it. Anyone can select underneath it, copy and paste, or delete the shape, and the “hidden” words come straight back. This has exposed information in court filings and government documents more than once.
Is the text really gone, or just hidden?
Really gone. A page you mark is rendered to an image with the black boxes painted into the pixels, then that image replaces the page. There is no text object left to select, copy or extract — which is not true of tools that simply draw a rectangle on top.
What is the catch?
A redacted page becomes a picture, so it is no longer selectable or searchable and its file size may grow. That is the honest cost of the text actually being removed. Pages you do not mark are copied across untouched and keep their real text.
Can I redact a password-protected PDF?
Yes. Enter the password when asked, the same as PDF Slim. It is used once to open the file and is never stored.
