Why the result is always a PNG

Rounded corners need transparency, and JPG cannot store it — saving as JPG would fill the cut corners with a solid colour, usually black. The download is a PNG so the corners are genuinely see-through on any background.

Both the corner radius and the border thickness are set as a share of the shorter edge, so the same settings look right on a small thumbnail and a large photo.

How do I round the corners of an image?
Add the image, drag the corners slider to the radius you want, and download. The result is a PNG whose corners are transparent.
Why can I not get a JPG?
JPG cannot store transparency, so the cut corners would have to be filled with a solid colour. A PNG keeps them see-through, which is the point of rounding them.
