Why iPhone photos need this

Apple devices save photos as HEIC, which stores the same picture in roughly half the space of a JPG. The catch is that plenty of software still cannot open one — older Windows versions, many web forms, a lot of printing services — so a photo that looks fine on the phone is unusable the moment it is sent somewhere.

The JPG is written at high quality, so the result is bigger than the HEIC. That is the trade for a file everything can read.

Photos carry the orientation as a separate tag, which is why they sometimes arrive sideways. The rotation is applied properly here rather than passed along.

Why will nothing open my iPhone photos?

Why is the JPG bigger than the HEIC?

Will my photos come out sideways?
No. Photos record their orientation as a separate tag rather than rotating the pixels, which is why they sometimes appear on their side. The rotation is applied to the image itself here, so the JPG is the right way up everywhere.
Is the location data removed?
Not by this tool — it converts the format and nothing else. If you want the GPS coordinates, timestamp and camera details gone, run the result through Remove EXIF Data afterwards.
