Why padding beats cropping
Marketplaces, profile pictures and print services often insist on a shape. Cropping to fit throws away part of the photo, usually the part at the edges you wanted. Adding space keeps the whole picture and changes only the canvas around it.
The result is a PNG, so a transparent background stays transparent. Pick white or black if the site you are uploading to does not accept transparency.
